5 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO AFTER FINISHING YOUR DIGITAL MARKETING COURSE

Well, you’ve just completed your digital marketing course – congrats , That is a huge milestone and definitely deserves some time to be celebrated. But now you might be thinking, “So what’s next?” That’s perfectly normal. I was in the same shoes and got to know really well that once you finish this course, reality dawns, and you start thinking about what you have to do to actually turn all that knowledge into a career

In this post, I will walk you through the step-by-step processes of exactly what you can do after completing a digital marketing course in order to get started as soon as possible. Along with that, I will add personal tips that would help me and many others when we were in those same shoes. So take your coffee, tea,  whatever; let’s get started.

Step 1: Polish Your LinkedIn Profile

Okay, LinkedIn. So when I first graduated my course, I thought, “Okay, so all I have to do is change my job title on LinkedIn, right?” Wrong! Believe me, LinkedIn is so much more than a place to just upload your resume. It really is an online business card, portfolio, and networking tool, all in one.

I rewrote my headline. Rather than a vague, generic name such as “Digital Marketing Graduate,” I selected one far more focused on what I could do: “Helping businesses grow with creative digital marketing strategies.” Why? It’s because recruiters and potential clients often look for keyword-related searches to the skill that is required. You want to represent yourself so that they know exactly how you can assist them.

A Few Tips to Optimise Your LinkedIn Profile

Just a few lines stating who you are, what you’ve learned, and what kind of work you want to do.

Key skills: Make sure to specify exactly what you have in terms of SEO, social media marketing, Google Ads, or email campaigns.

Be open to suggestions: Pick up any suggestion from your colleague, instructor, or even from clients for whom you have freelanced. Anything which speaks much about your credibility will come your way.

Be active: Comment on posts related to the industry, share insightful articles on the same subject, and also become a member of the groups associated with digital marketing. The busier you stay, the more you become a spot in front of recruiters.

I started doing this myself. After a matter of weeks, I began receiving invitations from the people in my field. That’s the secret: stay active and make sure that your profile represents what you’re good at.

Step 2: Freelancing – Start Small, Think Big

Well, like you all, I didn’t think that I was ready for a full-time job after I completed my course. So, I started freelancing as it seemed less daunting and would be a great way to build up my portfolio while making a little money on the side.

Now, let me tell you, freelancing will be an awesome way to actually test and try out your new skills on calmer waters. My first project was not some huge campaign for a renowned brand (far from it!), but it did help get that initial confidence, learn about client expectations, and know how to work on projects on one’s own.

How & Where to Begin Freelancing:

Upwork: It’s a fantastic platform to look for digital marketing gigs. I made a profile over there and started applying for smaller gigs like social media management and content creation.

Fiverr: If you want to offer specialised services like designing ads or writing email campaigns, I would suggest starting from Fiverr.

Freelancer: Another platform where I found some interesting marketing projects.

The secret to success is to start small. Don’t assume that you are going to get huge clients overnight. Begin with some low-scale projects, even if those barely pay the first time around, and let this build your portfolio step by step. As experience grows, so do opportunities.

Step 3: Keep Learning – The Digital World Never Stops

I learned the most after my course is how constantly changing digital marketing is. New tools, platforms, and strategies are coming on top every day, and staying updated on all these keeps a person competitive.

Personally, I did my best to learn at least one hour every week. Be it mastering Google Analytics or navigating the latest trends in Instagram marketing, this ongoing education has made all the difference for me.

Some Great (and Free) Resources

Google Digital Garage: They’ve fantastic free courses on everything from Google Ads to advanced analytics.

HubSpot Academy: Great place to learn more about inbound marketing, content creation, and email strategies, not to mention dozens of other topics.

YouTube: Sometimes, you will find that watching actual marketers do tutorials will teach you more practical information them than if you were to read any textbook in the world.

Step 4: Build Your Own Projects or Portfolio

At some point, you will have to demonstrate to the employer or client what you can do. If you don’t yet have much to say about your own client work, don’t worry; just create some.

For instance, I set up a personal blog wherein I posted my interest in observing digital marketing trends, case studies, and strategies. This not only proved to be something to show in interviews but also improved my writing skills, kept me abreast of industry trends, and even generated some clients who appreciated my approach.

Portfolio Ideas

Set up a blog or personal website: Build a professional site using a service such as WordPress or Squarespace, on which you could publicise your work, write articles or blog posts, and share your expertise.

Provide free work: If you know of a local business or friend who needs help with digital marketing offer your services free of charge or at cost. This gives you real-world experience to add to your portfolio.

Run your own campaigns: If you want to specialise in social media marketing or Google Ads, run a campaign for yourself or a personal project. Document the process, results, and what you learned. This can be a great talking point in interviews.

Step 5: Networking – It's More Important Than You Think

I don’t have superlatives to emphasise the importance of networking. When I first began, I was pretty shy about getting in touch with people in the industry. Eventually though, I came to realise that digital marketing is all about networks: it’s about webinars, LinkedIn groups, reaching out to someone for a virtual coffee chat. The more people you know, the more opportunities will come your way.

Free online seminars and workshops were one thing that seemed really to work for me. I learned so much from attending those, got to know people in my industry who are willing to share their advice and even connect me with job leads.

How to Start Networking

Online communities- Be part of LinkedIn, Facebook, Slack, and more digital marketing communities through which professionals share insights or even job leads, sometimes collaborate on a project.

Industry experts– Don’t hesitate to send a message to the person whose career you are admiring. A short, thoughtful LinkedIn message goes a long way.

Attend webinars and virtual events: Most marketing platforms and agencies offer free webinars. So you attend, ask questions, and make connections with the speaker and other attendees.

Now you have a LinkedIn profile all set, a portfolio established, and started accruing experience, it is time to start to begin the applications. This can be scary because this is the time you will begin applying for jobs. Remember, however, that you’ve spent all this time and effort learning-this is the time to put it into practice.

I was on the edge when I first applied, but soon realised the scale of demand for digital marketing. Businesses are always on the lookout for fresh talent, especially if you can bring new ideas to the table.

Job Search Tips For New Marketers

Customise resume and cover letter based on the job posting, and make sure you’re emphasising the skills you hold, which are about the job.

Share your portfolio It should be available on the web in a personal or professional portfolio site or, at the very least, sent as a PDF document to interviewers.

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t land your first job immediately. It may take some time. Apply again, increase your networks, and keep on learning.

Completing a digital marketing course is said to be the start of an exciting journey. On the surface, it’s quite overwhelming, but you get back on your feet when one has the right mindset and just a bit of perseverance. Start small, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

Finding your first job may take some time, so don’t get discouraged. Keep applying, expand your network, and continue learning. The digital marketing field offers many opportunities, whether you choose to freelance, work on personal projects, or seek full-time employment.

Stay proactive, embrace every experience, and remember – your next opportunity is just a click away.
